Yusuf Arakkal- Painter
Yusuf Arakkal is a Malayali painter based in Bangalore, India. He was born in the year 1945 at Chavakkad, Kerala. He lost both his parents at a very young age, His mother belonged to the royal family of Arakkal, She belonged to a reputed Muslim royal family and his father was from a well known business family based at Kozhikode. Yusuf left for Bangalore inorder to make a living and leaving the comforts of home, He was alone but had a strong passion to become a painter. The hardships that he faced while at Bangalore honed the artist in him and sharpened his sensibility and shaped him. He took a diploma in painting from Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, Bangalore at the same time worked as a technician dye-maker at HAL and later specialized in graphic print making from National Academy community studios, Garhi, Delhi.
His early paintings were studies in abstract of the lives of the city dwellers. He used a profusion of bright colours to depict their situation. Later, his growing concern with social issues started reflecting in his paintings. Arakkal, through his art, depicts the difficulties of the poor people, esp living in urban areas – their poverty and dismal living conditions and their courage in the face of tragedy. Since 1975, He has participated in many solo shows and held over forty shows at Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Kochi, Trichur, Calcutta, Mumbai, New Delhi. He works with mediums like Oils, Water colours, Graphics, Collages and Sculptures – In Bronze, Terra-cotta, Wood, Granite, Steel, Paper, Fibreglass etc. And also in National exhibitions and exhibitions organised by private galleries and groups. Currently He lives & works in Bangalore.
