Shravanabelagola is a city located in the Hassan district, Karnataka and is one of the most important Jain pilgrim centers. At Sravanabelagola there are two hills Chandragiri and Vindyagiri. Shravanabelegola is 158 km from Bangalore. You can reach there by taking the road to Nelamangala (27 km), and turn left onto NH-48. Divert from Hirisave to Sravanabelagola, and cover 18 km to reach the place.
The statue of Gommateshvara Bahubali at Sravanabelagola is one of the most important pilgrimage destination for jains. The 57-feet tall monolithic statue of Gommateshvara is located on Vindyagiri Hill, It is considered to be the world’s largest monolithic stone statue. The base of the statue has an inscriptions in Kannada as well as Marathi, devnagari script, dating from 981 AD. Every twelve years, thousands of devotees gather here to perform the Mahamastakabhisheka which is a grand ceremony in which the statue is covered with milk, curds, ghee, saffron and gold coins. The next Mahamastakabhisheka will be held in 2018.
