Savandurga is a hill located 60 km west of Bangalore. The hill is considered to be among the largest monolith hills in Asia. It is 1226 m above sea level and forms as part of the deccan plateau. The hill consists of peninsular gneiss, granites, basic dykes and late rites. The river akravathi passes through the nearby Thippagondanahalli reservoir. The hill consists of two granite cliffs of 4000 feet tall and 13 kilometres in circumference , one called Bilibetta or white peak, another Karibetta or black peak. This place was the secondary capital of magadi rulers such as kempegowda. Mysore took over the control of the place from 1638 to 1728,later in the year 1791,lord Cornwallis captured it from tipu sultan. The word savana means three time rituals. The temple Sri savandi veerabhadraswamy virabhadra is situated in the foothills of savanadurga hills.
The place is a heaven for Picnickers those who come to spend time among the serene environs of the hill. Rock climbers, cave explorers and adventurers are among others who frequent the locale. Manchanabele Dam is a place worth visiting as it is a great place for water sports. For all those who need to do some adventure activities have to get permission from the District forest officer at Ramanagaram with the payment of Rs 125/- per head as entry fee. Savandurga provides for some top class serious slab climbing routes in the world. These ranges anywhere from 700 to 950 feet of technical climbs, providing sport, trad or a trad-sport mix. Some of the routes have long run outs, and most of them face South or are exposed to South-east, implying that when the sun comes up, the rock becomes quite hot. The hills are home to endangered species like yellow-throated bulbuls, long-billed vultures and white-backed vultures. Other animals include sloth bear and leopard.
How to reach :
From majestic bus stand take a bus to magadi road, after that go to magadi road junction and Savandurga is 12 kms from here. There are private buses and KSRTC buses from there. From bangalore Savandurga can be reached in around 2 hrs 15 mins. Before you plan to do any adventure activities, do a complete research about the safety record of each organization.
