Pandit Basavraj Rajguru
Pandit Basavraj Rajguru was a leading hindustani vocal Musician. He was born on 24th August 1917. He was introduced to the world of music by his father. Rajguru was well adept at composing and singing vachanas, His devotional songs in the Kannada made his music more accessible to the general public of state. Under the guidance of panchakshari Gawai he mastered several Ragas and styles, later he moved to bombay and got the chance to learn under Sawai Gandharva. His repertoire was pure classical, Dhrupad to vachanas, Natyageet and Thumri. He knew more than forty types of ragas. Besides being an accomplished and talented singer, Rajaguru was patient and caring towards his disciples. The Government of India bestowed upon him the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. He was very strict in his pooja and sadhana. He died in Bangalore.
