Mysore Zoo (Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens)
Mysore Zoo is located in mysore.The 157 acre zoo is situated near the palace and is officially known as Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens. The zoo is home to a wide range of animals and birds, it is one of the oldest and major tourist attractions in Mysore. In the year 2000,a new adoption scheme was introduced successfully with celebrities, animal lovers, institutions contributing to the welfare of the animals.
The zoo was created in the year 1892 in 10 acres, at the summer palace and was then called the palace zoo. The zoo was set up by G.H krumbeigal,a horticulturist and a landscaper. The zoo was opened to the public in the year 1902 and was handed over to the department of parks and gardens of Mysore state government in the year 1948.The zoo was later expanded with the acquisition of the karanji tank, an artificial island created as a sanctuary for birds. It was handed over to the forest department in the year 1972 and was entrusted to Zoo Authority of Karnataka in 1979.The centenary celebrations of the zoo was held in the year 1990-91.
The KaranjiLakeNaturePark, SriChamarajendraZoological Gardens, Chamundi Conservation and RehabilitationCenter all comes under the control of Mysore zoo. The best time to visit the zoo is in the morning hours, due to the severe hot conditions the animals are not active between 11.30 am to 3 pm, so its better to visit before 11.30 or after 3pm.The zoo opens by 8.30 am in the morning and closes by 5.30 pm including Sundays, On Tuesdays the zoo will not be opened.
