Gudavi Bird Sanctuary
Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is located in Sorab taluk of Shimoga district. The sanctuary is 16 kms from Sorab town on the banavasi road in gudavi.The bird sanctuary, spread over an area of 0.74 square km, is one of the best in Karnataka. As per the survey conducted, there are around 217 species of birds belonging to 48 families in the sanctuary. The picturesque Gudavi lake flowing through its banks is a beautiful sight to watch. Various avian species comes migrating in different seasons for breeding.
The Variety of birds found in the sanctuary includes, Little grebe, White ibis, Pariah kite, Brahminy kite, Best season, Junglefowl, Waterfowl,White-headed crane, Indian pond heron, Black-headed crane, Darter, Indian shag, Bittern, Grey heron, Night heron, Little cormorant etc.
The best season to visit is June to October. The sanctuary is open to visitors from 6 AM to 6 PM on all days.
How to reach :
The nearest airport is at hubli,which is at a distance of 165 kms. Other accessible airports are Mangalore, which is 200 kms away and bangalore 274 kms. Shimoga has its own railhead and is well connected to Bangalore and Mysore by regular trains. Shimoga is connected by NH 206 to Bangalore. The distance can be covered in about 5- 6 hrs depending on traffic. There are regular buses between the two cities.
