Brahmagiri is located in the western ghats bordering kodagu district and wayanad district of kerala state. The 1608 M hill is a scenic tourist spot. The word Brahmagiri literally means mountain peaks covered with fog. Iruppu (Lakshmana Theertha) Falls lies on the Karnataka side of Brahmagiri.The temple Thirunelli lies on the kerala side of the hill and is believed to have constructed by lord Brahma itself. The temple is also known as Dakshina Kasi or the Kasi of South and it comprises of thirty granite pillars. The old temples and sacred ponds makes this hill a popular destination for devotees. The nearest towns to Brahmagiri hill are Kutta, Srimangala and Gonikkoppal.
You can spot a variety of wild animals like Lion-tailed Macaque, Elephant, Gaur, Tiger, Jungle Cat, Leopard Cat, Wild Dog, Sloth Bear, Wild Pig, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Nilgiri Languor etc. Python, cobra and king cobra are some of the reptiles found in the Brahmagiri wildlife sanctuary. Interesting birds in the Sanctuary include emerald dove, black bulbul and Malabar trogon. Brahmagiri hills are suitable for trekking. The trekking can be started from Mananthavady or from Kutta. From Karnataka side, trek to Brahmagiri from Iruppu Falls is around nine km and to Munikal Caves it is seven km. However trekkers have to take prior permission from Range Forest Officer at Srimangala before they start their trekking journey.The best time to visit the place is between december and february.
How to Reach :
Brahmagiri is about 60 Kms from Coorg and about 270 Kms from Bangalore. There is only one rajahamsa bus to Srimangala from Bangalore. From Srimangala, you will have to travel 10 kms to reach Iruppu falls from where your trekking journey will begin.By car, Drive through Mysuru Road to reach Srirangapatna and after that take a deviation from hunsur and proceed to Gonikkoppal and then take another deviation to reach nagarhole/srimangala.From kerala there are buses from Kutta to kattikulam,and from there you can take private bus or KSRTC bus to Thirunelli from where you can start your trekking journey.
