The Barkana Falls is one of the ten highest waterfalls in India. The waterfall is situated in balehalli forest area about 7 km from Agumbe village, Shimoga. The Barkana falls are formed by sita river and the waterfalls are currently the prime source of one of the hydro electric projects in Karnataka. The trek to Barkana Falls is a wonderful experience. The trek involves undertaking a steep route from the Western Ghats via Gumbo Ghats to reach the waterfall. The most interesting part of the trek is the presence of a wide variety of flora. Trekking to the falls takes you through a lush rainforest. From bamboos to herbs and shrubs, the forest has an amazing mix of plants and trees that never fail to delight trekkers. It is recommended to avoid trekking during the rainy season as leeches are in abundance during that time and the routes are slippery too. Barkana falls presents one of the most fascinating sights of natural wonders in Karnataka.
The place got its name due to the mouse deer that is found in the region. The barkhana View point is a wonderful spot to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the western ghats and the hills. The view point of the waterfall is located at a distance of about 4 km from the end point of the vehicle track. Trekking to the waterfall is a tricky task as the slopes are quite steep and can be risky at times. The awesome sight of the valley from the view point and the beauty of the waterfall are worth taking up the trek. There is a plant called guruji, and has the rare quality of blossoming once in every 7 years. It is believed that the flower signifies the impending occurrence of drought, as a result the production of honey increases by many folds and the entire village of Agumbe and the nearby areas are filled with honey.
How to reach :
You can start from Thirthahalli and reach Agumbe which is 33 kms and turn left towards shringere at agumbe-shringere circle and drive for half kilometre and take left turn towards barkhana falls. Bus from Thirthahalli and Agumbe towards Shringere will stop at Barkana road and the waterfalls can be reached by walking distance. The nearest airport is mangalore international airport which is 135 kms from Agumbe. The nearest railway station to Agumbe village is udupi railway station which is about 60 kms. The Shimoga Railway Station is located at a distance of about 90 km from Agumbe.
